COMMISSIONERATE OF CUSTOMS (PREVENTIVE), NORTH EASTERN REGION, SHILLONG

General Information :

            The Commissionerate of Customs (Preventive) Shillong has jurisdiction over the seven States of the North Eastern Region, viz. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.  The region covering an area of about 2.55 lakh sq. km is surrounded by Bangladesh in the west and southwest with an international border of nearly 1500 km.  Myanmar lies towards the east and southeast with approximately 1640 km of international border.  China with a border of about 1000 km. lies towards the north and northeast and the Kingdom of Bhutan with a border of nearly 1100 km. lies to the north and northwest.

Organizational Set-up :

            The Commissionerate divided into 8 (eight) divisions has 25 (twenty five) Land Customs Stations along Indo-Bangladesh border, 3 (three) Land Customs Stations along the Indo-Myanmar border and 3 (three) Land Customs Stations along Indo-Bhutan border.

            Other than the Land Customs Stations, there exists 1 (one) Inland Container Depot at Amingaon, Guwahati and an international airport (Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) at Guwahati, Assam.  The airport came into the International air traffic map with the commencement of the Air India flight from Guwahati to Bangkok on the 4th April 2002.

            To combat the menace of smuggling in the region the Commissionerate has 1 (one) Headquarters Preventive Unit, 8 (eight) Divisional Preventive Units attached to the Division, 28 (twenty eight) Customs Preventive Forces (CPF) and 16 (sixteen) Preventive Posts (PP).

Note:-

  1. In addition to the existing Land Customs Stations as above, there is an International Airport and an Inland Container Depot at Guwahati.

  1. Other than the above mentioned Land Customs Stations there are proposals with the Ministry for opening of Land Customs Stations at the following places:

(i)                  Kuliang at Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya along Indo-Bangladesh border.

(ii)                Maheskhola, situated at the border of West Khasi Hills and South Garo Hills District of Meghalaya along Indo-Bangladesh border.

(iii)               Nongtrai-Lafarge Surma Cement Cross Border Project – Located on the Indo-Bangladesh border in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya.

(iv)              Balat in West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya on the Indo-Bangladesh border.

(v)                Sabroom in Tripura along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
